CDMS at Case Dilution Refrigerator




CDMS at Case uses a dilution refrigerator to test detectors in conditions similar to those during the data-taking-experiment in the Soudan Underground Laboratory.

The fridge is able to cool our detectors to temperatures below 20 miliKelvin (that is about -273 Celcius and .02 degreesC or K above absolute zero). The fridge is able to achieve such low temperatures by combining condensed Helium-3 and Helium-4 in a process that removes heat from these already cold materials.
